About The Longest Shortest Time
Hi, I’m Hillary.
I started The Longest Shortest Time in 2010 after a rough childbirth and recovery as a way of connecting with other parents. At the time, most parenting media was either fueled by the “mommy wars” or offered my-way-or-the-highway advice. With The Longest Shortest Time, I pioneered a new kind of parenting media: welcoming, informative, and edgy with heart.
Over the years, I’ve made episodes on transgender pregnancy and miscarriage, a woman who simultaneously discovers her son and husband have autism, a young pilot who loses her license due to side effects from her IUD, and a program intended to prevent teen pregnancy that backfires. In 2017, we aired a popular series on discrimination against working moms that inspired listeners to advocate for — and win — changes to family leave policies at their workplaces, including one of the nation’s largest health insurers.
The show was picked up by WNYC and then Stitcher, becoming one of the first self-sustaining podcasts. We have many awards, including two Webbys and two awards from the Third Coast International Audio Festival, and TIME named us one of the 100 Best Podcasts of All Time.
One of my proudest achievements is that my interview with renowned midwife Ina May Gaskin led her to revise her book Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth to be inclusive of people who give birth with medical interventions.
